On Air Pollution, Nanoparticles & Why High Efficiency Air Filters Are A Necessity

air pollution smoke contains nanoparticles

Some buyers may take our HEPA air filters for granted. After all, the concept of an air purifier seems reassuring on face value. Yet, even though removing 98-99.99% of air particulates from the air sounds ideal, most won’t see the true value of their air purifier, unless they understand the health issues an air purifier can help with nanoparticles.

In a recent article from Society For Science, scientists go into detail about the side-effects of smaller nanoparticles hidden inside harmful airborne particulates.

Nanoparticles Effect on Health

This in-depth piece briefly explains how the human body can assist in removing larger air pollutants from our respiratory tract.  The main focus is on how scientists are just now starting to understand the negative effects of these smaller, microscopic nanoparticles on our bodies.

Far smaller particles, called nanoparticles, can sneak past this first line of defense. These airborne particles are measured in the billionths of a meter. (Nano is a prefix meaning a billionth.) These particles can pass all the way into the lungs. Once they settle on lung cells, the pollutants can begin blocking the movement of oxygen into — and carbon dioxide out of — the blood.

The largest nanoparticles are only 100 nanometers across. Scientists are just starting to understand how soot and other nanoparticles interact with the body. Experts already know these pollutants are small enough to slip inside cells. There, they can damage DNA, proteins and other cellular structures. That leads to all kinds of health problems — and not just in the elderly. Kids experience them, too.

Nanoparticles also damage blood vessels. These ultra-small molecules impair the ability to smell. They can even cause issues with learning and memory. Brains exposed to nanoparticles develop abnormal features similar to those found in people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. And that has scientists worried.

To make matters even more alarming, once these damaging nano-particles have been inhaled into the lungs, they move into the bloodstream and end up polluting the brain.

Once these microscopic nanoparticles gain entry to the brain, they can damage vital cells in a number of ways.

Inflammation Leads To Stroke

Endangered cells respond to distress by dispatching white blood cells to fight infections. However, with regular exposure to harmful nanoparticles, inflammation can become persistent, which leads to hardened blood vessels that can eventually become blocked and lead to a stroke.

Nerve Receptors Start To Fail

Nerves work by sending chemical messengers to one another and eventually channeling proteins on the outside of cells, called receptors. These receptors inform the brain when the body is susceptible to harmful outside health impediments. However, nanoparticles can damage those receptors, leaving your body vulnerable.

Free Radicals

Nanoparticles contain free radicals. This means some of their molecules are missing an electron and upon entering the bloodstream, they start to steal their missing electrons from healthy cells – leaving many vital cells broken and many other killed altogether.

This direct impact of nanoparticles on the brain is extremely worrisome, since the damage incurred can often trigger serious effects such as liver & kidney damage, hearing loss and damage to the central nervous system.

Since nanoparticles are hidden in common air pollutants like smog, smoke, cooking odors and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), the only way to protect your body from these unsuspecting, microscopic terrors is by improving air quality. Although there are many ways to alleviate airborne pollutants at a high level, the most effective solution is a high-performance air purifier.

How to Filter the Air

Using the same filtration used in hospital operating rooms, our residential and commercial air purifiers are built with advanced filter technology, specifically to prevent the smallest particles from ever entering your airstream. We do so, by offering industrial grade filtration via 3-30X more filter media, depending on the competitive model.

Because of that superior technology, our filters were rated number in an independent study by Clemson.

Now that you know the details and importance of filtering out even the smallest particles from your air, don’t settle for a cheap solution to improved quality. Instead, consider an Oransi Air Purifier with maximum filtration and breathe the healthiest air possible.
